I almost didn't go. I'd had a long week, my Spanish felt rusty, and the idea of spending an evening stumbling through sentences with strangers felt more exhausting than energising. I went anyway. Here's what happened.

The setup

A Somos Polyglots exchange night pairs Spanish learners with English learners for 20 minutes each — then you swap. You're not performing. You're not being graded. You're just two people, each helping the other practise something they want to get better at. The stakes feel low because they are low.

The conversation I didn't expect

My partner that evening — I'll call her Valentina — was learning English for work. She spoke Spanish to me; I spoke English to her. We started with the usual: where are you from, what do you do. Ten minutes in we were talking about our families, what we missed about home, what surprised us about living somewhere new.

None of that was on a lesson plan. None of it required perfect grammar. It just required showing up and being willing to be a little vulnerable with someone who was doing the same thing.

What I took home

Three new phrases I'd never encountered in a textbook. A specific word for the feeling of missing a place before you've even left it. And the realisation that my Spanish was actually better than I'd been telling myself for months.

The week felt lighter after that. Not because something dramatic happened, but because I'd done something I was afraid of and it had turned out fine. Better than fine.

Come to the next exchange night.

No preparation needed. Just show up willing to try.
