Learning Korean as an Adult: What Nobody Tells You

The good, the genuinely hard, and the surprisingly rewarding parts of picking up Korean after 25 — from people who are in the middle of doing it.

The good: Hangul is actually fast

The thing everyone warns you about — the script — turns out to be one of the fastest parts. Hangul was deliberately designed to be learnable in a short time. Most adult learners can read it within a week of consistent practice. Not fluently, not fast — but read it. The alphabet is logical, phonetic, and well-structured in a way that, say, Chinese characters or Arabic script are not.

The hard: speech levels and formality

Korean has several speech levels — different ways of speaking depending on the age and status of the person you're talking to. For native English speakers especially, this requires a genuine mental shift. You don't just choose words; you choose a register. Getting this wrong isn't rude — it's just obviously foreign — but getting it right is one of the more nuanced and rewarding challenges of the language.

The surprisingly rewarding: the community

Korean learners are everywhere, and they are enthusiastic. Online forums, language exchange apps, local meetups — the Korean learning community is one of the most active of any language. You will find people to practise with. You will find people who are at exactly your level and struggling with exactly the same things. That solidarity is not nothing.

Should you do it?

If you're drawn to Korean — by the culture, the music, the food, the people — then yes. Adult brains learn languages differently than children's, but not worse. We bring patience, context, and the ability to see patterns. We also have Google Translate, which children in classrooms in 1985 definitely didn't.

Start with the script. Get a speaking partner early. Accept that honorifics will confuse you for a while. Keep going.
