They're the same language — and also quite different. The question of which variety to learn is one of the most common ones we hear from new Portuguese students. Here's an honest answer.
How different are they, really?
Brazilians and Portuguese people can understand each other — the way a New Yorker and a Glaswegian can, roughly. The vocabulary is largely shared, the grammar is the same, but the pronunciation, rhythm, and some everyday expressions diverge enough that each variety requires its own adjustment period.
🇧🇷 Brazilian Portuguese
More open vowels. Slower, clearer enunciation. More widely taught in language apps and YouTube content. Spoken by 215 million people — the largest Portuguese-speaking population in the world.
🇵🇹 European Portuguese
Swallowed vowels, faster speech, closer to written Portuguese. Useful for travel across Portugal and parts of Africa. Slightly less beginner-friendly in terms of pronunciation.
So which should you choose?
Follow your motivation. If you love Brazilian music, want to travel to Brazil, or find Brazilian culture your entry point — learn Brazilian Portuguese. The content, the community, and the joy will carry you further than any grammatical argument.
If you're drawn to Lisbon, to Portuguese literature, to working in Portugal or Mozambique or Angola — learn European Portuguese. The accent is harder at first but you'll adapt quickly once you're immersed in real content.
The practical answer: either one, fully committed, is better than both, half-heartedly. The varieties are close enough that switching later is an adjustment, not a restart.
